What Wind Speed Is Safe for Flying a Drone?
If you've ever checked three different weather sources before a flight and gotten three different "safe wind speed" answers, you're not imagining it — there genuinely are several different numbers involved, and they measure different things.
Four different numbers, one decision
1. Sustained wind speed is the average wind over a short period (typically 10 minutes in official meteorology, though consumer weather apps usually show a shorter rolling average). This is the number most weather apps lead with.
2. Gusts are short-lived spikes above the sustained speed — a brief burst of faster wind lasting a few seconds. Gusts are usually the more dangerous number for a small multirotor, because they cause sudden attitude changes the flight controller has to fight against, rather than a steady load it can trim against continuously. 3. Your drone manufacturer's wind resistance rating is a real, tested spec — DJI, for example, publishes a "Max Wind Speed Resistance" figure for every model, usually expressed on the 0–12 Beaufort scale or directly in m/s. This is the closest thing to a hard technical limit for your specific aircraft, and it's the number UAV Meteo's custom drone profile editor asks you for directly, because it's more meaningful than any generic threshold.
4. UAV Meteo's (or any weather app's) generic threshold is a general-purpose default tuned for typical consumer and prosumer multirotors — not your specific drone, not your specific skill level, and not a regulatory limit. It's a reasonable starting point when you haven't set up a custom profile, not a substitute for your aircraft's actual rating.
Why these numbers don't match
A weather app's "sustained wind" figure is usually measured or modeled at 10 meters above ground — the standard meteorological reference height — while you might be flying at a very different altitude, where wind is often stronger (see Why Wind Can Be Stronger at 120m Than at Ground Level). A manufacturer's wind resistance rating, meanwhile, is tested under specific, controlled conditions that may not include gusts at all.
None of this means the numbers are wrong — it means they're answering slightly different questions, and a responsible pre-flight check looks at more than one of them.

On the home page, the Wind Speed and Wind Gusts cards are shown separately and rated independently — a green wind card next to a caution-colored gust card is a real, meaningful signal, not a bug. If you set up a custom drone profile with your manufacturer's actual wind resistance figure, every threshold recalculates around that specific number instead of the generic default.
