Why a Low Chance of Rain Doesn't Always Mean Good Flying Weather

It is easy to open a weather app, see a 10% chance of rain, and assume:

Great. Perfect flying weather.

But rain probability is only one part of the forecast.

A day with a low chance of rain could still have:

  1. Strong wind
  2. Dangerous gusts
  3. Poor visibility
  4. Extreme temperatures
  5. Low cloud
  6. Thunderstorms nearby

For a drone pilot, the better question is not:

Will it rain?

It is:

What will the complete flight environment look like?

Rain probability is not a flyability score

A precipitation probability describes the likelihood of measurable precipitation for a forecast area and time period according to the forecasting system being used.

It does not tell you:

  • Whether wind will be strong
  • Whether gusts will occur
  • Whether visibility will be good
  • Whether conditions are suitable for your specific drone

That is why looking only at a weather icon can be misleading.

A dry day can still be too windy

Consider these two forecasts:

Forecast A

  • 70% chance of light rain
  • 8 km/h wind
  • 12 km/h gusts
  • Good visibility

Forecast B

  • 0% chance of rain
  • 35 km/h wind
  • 50 km/h gusts

The second forecast may look better if you only care about staying dry.

For many small consumer drones, however, the wind and gust conditions could be the more important limitation.

Gusts matter separately

Average wind can look acceptable while individual gusts are much stronger.

That difference matters because a drone responds to the conditions it actually encounters, not simply to the average number shown on the forecast.

A day with moderate average wind and large gusts may require more caution than a steady wind of similar speed.

Visibility can also limit a flight

Fog, haze, smoke, and precipitation can reduce visibility.

Even when the aircraft is physically capable of flying, poor visibility can affect:

  • Visual awareness
  • Obstacle detection
  • Photography and video
  • Situational awareness

A forecast with no rain is not necessarily a forecast with good visibility.

Check the complete weather picture

Before flying, look at:

Wind

Can your drone operate safely in the expected sustained wind?

Gusts

Could short increases exceed your comfort level or your aircraft's limits?

Precipitation

Is rain expected during the planned flight?

Visibility

Can you safely maintain awareness of the aircraft and environment?

Temperature

Could conditions affect battery or aircraft performance?

Wind at altitude

Will conditions become significantly stronger after climbing?
