Front vs. side overlap
Front overlap is how much consecutive photos along one flight line overlap each other — higher front overlap means the drone triggers the shutter more often. Side overlap is how much adjacent flight lines overlap — higher side overlap means flight lines are spaced closer together. Both matter for photogrammetry software to successfully stitch images into a map.
Typical values
75% front / 65% side overlap is a common default for orthomosaic mapping; simpler visual surveys can often use less (60%/50%), while complex terrain or 3D modeling often wants more (85%+/75%+).
